A big sinkhole appeared near the University of South Florida in Tampa on Sunday and has swallowed a Toyota Camry, forcing 11 families residing in a nearby building to evacuate.
According to the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, the sinkhole is about 20 feet wide and 20 feet deep, and is still growing. People living near the area called the authorities early Sunday when they saw the hole in the parking lot next to their building.
Code Enforcement Supervisor Robin Caton said, “The sinkhole has grown. We’re concerned about that.” His office will continue to monitor the development of the sinkhole and hope that the building nearby will stay in place.
The building, called Bordeaux Village condominiums, is a 12-unit condo located on North 50th Street and officials have ordered to shut off the power and water services in it. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
