“Thor” rules North American box office with $66 M

Marvel and Paramount Studios’ “Thor” smashed all competition as it raked in $66 million on its opening day in North America to rule the domestic box office.

The 3D superhero movie, which stars Australian actor Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder, has now earned $176 million since it opened abroad 11 days ago.

Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount, said, “When you look at the Marvel brand, to be at this level of success on a global level is certainly a great story. It was also a great move on Marvel’s part to go with Kenneth Branagh and Chris Hemsworth.”

In second place was “Fast Five,” the fifth movie in the “Fast and the Furious” franchise. It earned $32.5 million to raise its 10-day total to $140 million.
