Tiger Woods, arguably considered to be the best golfer in the world, was hurt in an accident when the car he was driving hit a fire hydrant and a tree in front of his Florida residence Friday.
Woods was hurt when his Cadillac Escape hit a fire hydrant as he was pulling out of his driveway, and also hit a tree on the other side of the road. The airbags in Woods’ vehicle did not deploy, implying that the vehicle was travelling less than 33 m.p.h.
The Florida Highway Patrol said in a statement that Woods’ injuries are serious, but Woods’ office contests this, saying that Woods suffered only minor injuries.
Police say that Woods was bleeding from the mouth, where he had lacerations on his lips. Woods was unconscious when authorities arrived at the scene. Reports also say that Elin Nordegren, Woods’ wife, ran outside as soon as she heard the crash, and used a golf club to smash the rear mirror to get Woods out of the vehicle.
The FHP says that the crash appears not to be alcohol-related. However, investigations are still ongoing and all charges related to the incident are still pending.
