Hawaii, USA – The tsunami warning issued for the islands of Hawaii because of the 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile had been cancelled earlier, after further observation revealed that the earthquake’s effects on Hawaii’s waters were smaller than expected.
Hawaii was under a tsunami warning issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, just like most other areas along the Pacific rim and Asia, after Chile experienced an 8.8-magnitude earthquake Friday night. The earthquake was followed by numerous other aftershocks that also logged in at destructive strengths.
The tsunami warning for Hawaii was cancelled when wave patterns in the area showed that the earthquake effects were smaller than expected, with only an average increase in wave height of about three feet (1 meter). While the wave height increase is clearly noticeable, it didn’t pose any significant risks to the area.
“We were extremely fortunate and thank goodness our state came through this without any reported incidents,” shared Governor Linda Lingle. “Our hearts go out to those who lost their lives and those injured in yesterday’s earthquake in Chile.”
