“Ugly Betty” gets the ax, will wrap its final season in April

ABC has decided to cancelUgly Betty,” a Colombian-televonela-based television series that debuted in 2006 and made America Ferrera a star.

ABC Entertainment Group chairman Steve McPherson and Executive producer Silvio Horta said in a joint statement, “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

The news did not really come as a surprise: the ratings started to decline during the series’ third season. The network transferred the show to different timeslots, but this move did not turn out to be productive.

In 2007, America Ferrera won an Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for her portrayal of Betty.
