USA Basketball trims to 15

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo and head coach Mike Krzyzewski has announced the 15 players who will advanced in the next phase of training camp, which begins August 10 in New York.

The remaining 15-man roster, which will be cut anew by 12 by August 26 are guards Chauncey Billups, Stephen Curry, Eric Gordon, Rajon Rondo, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook; forwards Kevin Durant, Rudy Gay, Danny Granger, Andre Iguodala, Jeff Green, Kevin Love, Lamar Odom and centers Tyson Chandler and Brook Lopez.

The remaining players who have been eliminated from the 19 that finished the camp in Las Vegas are Tyreke Evans, O.J. Mayo, JaVale McGee and Gerald Wallace. Among the four, Evans was the only real obvious cut due to ankle injury.

The remaining players of the roster will start the 7-day training in New York beginning August 10 and will include an exhibition game against France on August 15. On August 16, the team will go to Madrid and train for a couple of days and play exhibition games with Lithuania and Spain. After that, they’ll travel to Athens to meet Greece for their last exhibition game on August 25.

The World Championship begins on August 28 in Turkey and the U.S. will play five preliminary games over six days in Istanbul, and would probably need to win two of them to advance to the 16-team, single-elimination tournament. The gold medal game will took place on September 12 with the winner automatically gains a slot for the London Olympic Games in 2012.
