The presence of high levels of vitamin B6 and an essential amino acid called methionine in the blood may reduce the risk of developing lung cancer.
This may be the reason why some smokers acquire lung cancer and some don’t, scientists said.
The study was conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and is going to be published in Journal of the American Medical Association this month. Around 400,000 people, who are former and current smokers that live in Europe, participated in the experiment.
IARC’s Paul Brennan said, “This indicates that diet may have an important role in lung cancer development. But it’s still a little premature to say simply that if you change your diet and eat more foods with these vitamins then you’ll change your future lung cancer risk.”
However, they advised that not smoking is still the best way to keep lung cancer and other diseases away.
