26-foot waves slammed into the Louis Majesty cruise ship in the Mediterranean a few hours ago, leaving 2 passengers dead and 6 more injured.
French maritime authority’s Cmdr. Bernard Celier in Toulon said, winds traveling at speed 60 miles per hour had been experienced in the area, and these were most likely the cause of the big waves, and not the recent earthquake in Chile.
With around 2,000 people on board, the cruise ship was located off Spain’s northeastern Catalonia region coast when the waves hit it and smashed several windows.
According to the Greek coast guard, winds of this caliber rarely occur, so it was quite difficult to predict them. However, an oceanographer for the Spanish government shares that large waves such as these actually occur more often than most would expect.
