“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” emerged as the top box office draw this week raking in $24.4 million, based on studio estimates Sunday.
Based from a successful book about a boy in middle school, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules,” is the sequel to the “Diary of A Wimpy Kid” movie which opened last year at $22.1 million. The movie stars Zachary Gordon as Greg and Devon Bostick as Rodrick.
Another new release “Sucker Punch,” claimed the second spot with $19 million. Released by Warner Bros., the movie is a fantasy tale of young women who retreats their dark past by entering into a dream world where they compete against rivals. It stars Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, and Abbie Cornish.
Last weekend’s top grosser Relativity Media’s “Limitless” dropped only 19 percent of ticket sales on its way to third spot with $15 million. Adapted from the 2001 novel The Dark Fields, the movie stars Bradley Cooper, Abbie Cornish, and Robert de Niro. At fourth spot is “The Lincoln Lawyer” which turned in $11 million.
The animated film “Rango” featuring the voice of Johnny Depp dropped from runner-up to number 5 with its $9.8 million total gross. After four weeks in theaters, Rango has now jacked up $106.4 million.
Despite the combined more than $40 million delivered by “Diary of A Wimpy Kid” and “Sucker Punch,” Hollywood remained on a dry spell. Total gross was at $120 million, a decrease of 7 percent in the same period in 2010 when “How to Train A Dragon” ruled the box office with $43.7 million.
