Winter Olympics 2010:  Katherine Reutter, Alyson Dudek advance in women’s 500 meters short track
 

Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010 – U.S. skaters Katherine Reutter and Alyson Dudek advance to the quarterfinals of the women’s short track 500 meter speedskating medal event, after a great performance in the event’s heats Saturday.

Reutter managed to win her first go on the first heat with a time of 44.187 seconds. Dudek subsequently won second during the fifth race with a time of 44.560 seconds. In comparison, World record holder Wang Meng (China), also the reigning gold medalist in the distance event, also set an Olympic record Saturday, after a 43.926-second run on the third heat, besting the previous Olympic record of 44.118 set by Yang Yang (China) from 2002.

Reutter and Dudek are also part of the four-skater U.S. team for the 3,000-meter women’s relay, also qualifying Saturday. South Korea is the four-time reigning champion of the event.
