Abe Pollin, the team owner who brought a championship title to the NBA team Washington Wizards, died on Tuesday due to corticobasal degeneration, a rare neurological disease. He was 85.
The Washington Sports and Entertainment announced his death but no additional details were revealed.
In 2005, Pollin underwent heart bypass surgery. He also had progressive supranuclear palsy which is a rare brain disorder that affects balance and movement.
A few hours after his death, the Wizards defeated the 76ers, 108-107, with Antawn Jamison scoring a season-high 32 points and 14 rebounds.
Jamison said, “Guy’s done so much, not only for this city but making this world a better place. It’s tough. Sometimes you take things for granted, but it helps you put things in perspective and lets you know that this is only a game. It’s a game he loved so much. He’s truly going to be missed. But you know, every game we play from now on, he’s going to be watching.”
Mr. Pollin is survived by his wife, two sons, two granddaughters and a great granddaughter.
