Recording artist and producer Wyclef Jean is reportedly going to announce his plans to run for president of the earthquake-stricken Haiti.
The news was revealed on Tuesday by Pierre Eric-Jean Jacques, a former head of Haiti’s Chamber of Deputies. He said the hip hop star will be a candidate of his coalition in the November 28 election but declined to give some more details. He said, “Yes, we have an agreement (with Jean). But he’s the one who has to announce it first. Reports say Jean will make an official announcement on Thursday in Haiti.
Several Haitians are expected to vie for the presidential spot, including Jean’s uncle Raymond Joseph, Haitian musician Michel “Sweet Micky” Martelly, and former mayors and prime ministers.
Jean, 37, was born near Port-au-Prince, Haiti but left the country and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He is famous in his homeland for his music and charity works.
