An Atlanta interstate highway became a spectacle as a visiting circus zebra was seen galloping along the streets of downtown Atlanta, after it was able to escape from its handlers.

Witnesses were definitely surprised to see a zebra in the middle of traffic. “All of a sudden a freaking zebra comes running down the street like a car,” Daniel Nance told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Five or six police cars were in hot pursuit. And a bunch of officers on foot. But then I got scared, thinking … what else is loose?”

According to Crystal Drake, spokeswoman for Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, they were preparing for an evening show when the zebra broke away after something spooked him. “We’re not sure what it was that startled him, but we’re looking into that,” she said.

The 12-year-old zebra, named Lima, was unhurt. “He obviously was excited, but he was in good shape. His handler calmed him down,” Drake added.
